Government Grants to Cover Overdue Property Taxes?

My friend owns a house and was always self employed in a business that hit the "skids" a few years back. He has recently gotten regular employment BUT is 2 years behind in his Property taxes as well as his School taxes. The good old tax system won't allow paym, ents they want the whole thing at once which he simply cannot come close to doing and 9is going to lose the home he has lived in for 20 years. He has a mortgage and some other bills he is now able to keep up but obviously his credit also hit the "skids" with the recent down turn of the business he was in so his credit isn't good. I am pretty sure there are grants people can obtain for these sort of things OR loans that would overlook the bad credit now that he is employed on a job. Every place on the Internet wants $$ and is just like the amazing Kreskin for info to FREE government money and this This info shouldn't be a gov. secret. FREE info PLEASE!!

There are many SCAMs out there with regards to grants. Avoid companies that promises you grants if you pay fees.

Unfortunately for your friend, the government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt and no grants for simply fattening your wallet.

Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.

For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.

There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs
My wife obtains grants for a small city. She says there are no grants given to private individuals to help with past due debits; all these internet schemes are just that; scams.
Never seen ANYONE here get an answer to the contrary.

Call the tax office and ask them if there are any programs in that area to assist.
The internet places that want $$ are scams..if the property tax people have given him no relief, he's not going to get any help from the government either - they are looking to collect money, not give it away.

If he is in dire straits (and it sounds like he is), he may want to contact his mortgage company and see if they will pay the taxes and let him pay the mortgage company back. The mortgage company will pay the taxes because if the taxing authority forecloses on the home, the mortgage company loses it's entire interest in the property, where if the mortgage company pays and adds the owed money to the mortgage, they have a better chance of getting paid.
