Answers:
Please don't use a tax reclaim company - it's simple enough to call in at your local tax office, or write them a letter recaliming your tax. You will need to send your original P60 for 06/07, which they will return to you.
yeah you will have to contact the tax office which your employer used then put it writing that you want to claim a tax rebate . ive just done the same thing even though i worked in morecambe though my employer tax office was in wales just ring the normal number and they will sort you out
Yes, its true. If you earn under 5225 in any tax year you can claim any tax back earnt. Even if you earn more you are probably due quite a big refund. I got back over 1000 pounds.

I used a company called:

http://www.taxfix.co.uk

Who were very helpful.

Good luck!
If your tax code was 50, then you would only be able to earn £500 before paying tax.

If you were on the "normal" tax code (which would have been 503L for the year to 5 April 2007), then you would be able to earn up to £5035 IN TOTAL in the year before paying tax.

However, you will need to say what you were doing for the other 6 months where you were not there. (Were you abroad, working somewhere else, claiming JSA, or a student?)

Don't use any of the tax refund companies, they will grab a huge chunk of anything you can get back. You can do it all yourself just by writing to the tax office shown on your P60 and asking them to check. Remember to send the original P60 as they won't accept a photocopy. Don't expect a reply within about six weeks though, as the taxman is currently snowed under with everybody asking for refunds and questioning their tax code at the moment though.

Alternatively, just take it into your local tax office and they will tell you anything else you need, and you might get quicker service.
The earnings level for last year was £5035 , so if you earned less than that then you should pay no tax. If you did, then it will be refunded in September unless you apply earlier.

One thing though - why were you here only 6 months, are you not of British nationality? Although, there are very few circumstances when it will make a difference, especially as you are probably a student?

Please dont use one of the Taxfix-type companies. They can charge a large fee - you can do it all yourself in a letter. Contact me directly if you need more info - I do this as part of my normal job.
I presume you mean before april 5th, if so your employer should have given you a p45( or p60 if there on that date). If you have these pop into your inland revenue office for a refund of tax paid. If you do not have these go to the tax office providing name of employer who deducted tax, and if you still have a payslip take it with you. It will take longer but the revenue will contact your former employers asking them to supply the relevant information.

Good luck and happy spending.
