I saw a few United States tax tokens from Washington state and utah and never seen them or heard of them before. What were they used for?

Perhaps they were used for paying taxes?
These have been gone for close to 50 years. They were issued by a few states to handle transactions where the sales tax resulted in a fractional cent difference to the buyer or seller. They were not US legal tender, but separate coinage only for transactions in the state involving sales tax.
