$100,000 and pay 36,000 of that in income tax?

The first year i work I will pay 36% in tax, plus student loans, so more of my money goes to the government than myself?
Am I thinking about this correctly?

Answer:
As John Lennon said, "Be thankful [they] don't take it all."
Nope, that is correct. My parents made around 400,000 last year and gave about half to the government.
It's crazy!
And I really don't know where the hell all our money goes. Doesn't that frustrate anyone?
Welcome to reality!
You just became conservative in your thinking, congratulations!
Sounds about right for your salary range.
Don't you love paying people half your income to support their horoin addiction?
Get a financial advisor. You can put away some of the earnings into tax shelters and lower your taxable income.
That's how rich people stay rich.
