Has anyone taken the HR Block Income Tax course?
Answer:
I recently took one of HR's EA (Enrolled Agent's) review classes. I have taken Jackson Hewitt's Income Tax Preparer classes in the past. You need to ask yourself if you really want to consider income tax preparation as a source of income.
With the proliferation of income tax preparation software that is marketed directly to consumers, IRS free-file, and other such programs, I think that revenue from Income Tax Preparation may be dwindling. However, if you are sure that this is what you want to do, and you find it interesting, then there is a way to make some money.
As far as customer service, you will have to go over and above the level of service that your potential clients at HR expect from a tax preparer. That basically means that in addition to the classes you may eventually take, you will have to devote some additional hours to studying the tax laws, tax changes, and other relevant information as it relates to the 2006 tax year. Now is a great time to do that.
I would also suggest that you join an association such as the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP). Their website has an abundance of info. related to the field.
The course is pretty easy if you do the reading and are generally competant in math. H&R can be a good company to work for but their treatement of staff in recent years has gone downhill. You could prolly do just as well with any other part time job money wise. If you are interested in a career in finance or accounting type work, this is a good door opener.
I am currently taking their course. I have been doing peoples taxes for years. I thought I would give H & R Block a try. So far the experience has been positive. if you can read and do basic Math you shouldnt have any problems. The rates vary for the course but If they hire you you get most of the money back. They just keep the material costs.
