Does anybody know how Tax Credits are worked out because they are saying that I owe them £10,000?

why has this happened, I haven't lied about my earnings, and I don't know on what basis they pay you, this whole thing could leave me blacklisted when I actually haven't done anything wrong, anybody know how to complain?

Answers:
Telephone 0845 300 3900 this is the tax credit helpline, or telephone the number on the letter that you have received asking for the overpayment.

Request (do not demand, be polite) a full explanation as to why they think you owe this amount of money.

The explantion takes about 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. If anybody telphones/visits in the meantime tell them you are waiting for an explanation.

The explanation will then tell you exactly why you owe this money. If you then dispute the explanation telephone 0845 300 3900 and ask for form TC846 Tax Credit dispute form, on receipt complete and return usually you have 7 days to return this form. Then wait. You will have to explain fully why you dispute the explanation.

One major cause of Tax Credit overpayments is that people do not complete the renewal paperwork on time. If the renewal process has not been completed on time (by 31 July following the tax year in question) the tax credit office have the right to cancel the existing claim, and then claim back monies paid out the previous year or the year to which the renewal paperwork is for and payments made on the current in payment claim.

It is VITAL that the renewal process is completed.

If in any doubt about tax credits telephone the helpline on 0845 300 3900, you can also telephone this number to obtain the address to write to if you wish to make a complaint.
At the end of the day it is them that has overpayed the money.
I would speak to your local Citizens advice as they would help put you i right direction on how to complain about this.

Also I would ask them for a breakdown of the overpayments to the last pound.
First you want copies of all your award letters for the period they say you were overpaid. You need to check that they used the information you gave them, and that you gave them the right info - from your p60 or wage slips.
You also need to try and remember when you informed them of any changes.
If it turns out that you gave the info correctly and at the right time, then dispute it (in writing)(they should send you the addresses etc to complain to) If it is their fault, they cannot recover the overpayment.
To anyone else claiming - make sure you put everything in writing, keep a copy, and keep anything they send you, just in case you need it. They may not tell you of an overpayment until well after the end of the tax year and you need to be able to check back.
PS you wont be 'blacklisted' because this isnt a credit agreement debt.
Oh No that's disgusting!

They have probably got it wrong. Have you been advising them (on time) how much you were earning? If so if it is their error they should not make you pay it back.

I got a letter saying I had been overpaid by £500, I had to pay it back £50 per month. Then I got another letter saying I had been overpaid 2 more yrs (the years before the one I'd just paid back).

I went crazy. I had ALWAYS told them how much I was earning. If you ring and explain you don't think it's correct they will send you a pack which you have to fill in (not too complicated, don't worry). They did not make me pay the other 2 years back.

I hope you get it sorted, what a worry! From what I've seen on GMTV were are just one of many caught up in this fiasco!

Good Luck!
They work it out on your income and eligibility but the Tax Credit office is in total chaos and now they are asking for refunds from quite a lot of people although when applications are deemed as viable they are the ones that say yes, i get Tax Credits and worry too about this issue, it's hard to challenge them as they carry a lot of power but please try.
