What would I need to do to make a name for myself as a photograher?
Answer:
Hi,
I recommend that you begin by building a highly diverse portfolio. This will broaden your areas of expertise, and allow you to work with clients in all areas. Since you seem like a novice, you should begin with something simple like taking head shots for up-n-coming models/actors. Try http://www.craigslist.org and choose the area where you live. Go to the 'talent' & 'creative' sections. Don't charge much; this will bring in more clients. Plus, you are new to the game.
You can even network with other photographers and make-up artists, and do an apprentinceship sort of thing.
Also, if you are interested in being a party photographer, you should consider contacting local nightclubs, and become a party promoter. Create a contract with them, where you are 'allowed' to take pictures of the partygoers (for free, or charge something small like $1 a photo), and post on your website (or theirs). Use Photoshop to do a watermark of your name and website like this http://www.lasvegaspics.com/.
For something more classic, post an ad and specify that you are a budding photographer, and are willing to photograph them/their event for a small fee, as long as they are willing to allow the use of their pictures in your portfolio.
Good Luck!! And get a website (if you don't have one already).
Also, check out this website to get in touch with other photographers, http://photographers.com/.
Desi :-)
Luck. Lots of it. And maybe (but only maybe) some talent.
First of all, start out taking classes and learning all you can enhancing your skills in the process. Build a portfolio of your work and submit it to various agencies. In the mean time perfect yourself, and get involved with jobs such as wedding photographer or art work photograpy. Photography is such a broad field. What kind of photgraphy are you talking about? Then people can give you better information perhaps.
invent new lighting or new technology like my great-grandfather and great-great grandfather did. They were Theodore Heinig and Joseph Morris Appleton
Something that appeals to the public. That catches there eye and heart.
hard work, dedication, practise, experience. and researching online and in book stores, magazine outlets, stands on who will take submissions and enter contests.
i think there's a photographers market book out there also..
look in any book store and or go here.
http://www.amazon.com/2006-photographers.
or go directly to the site
http://www.writersdigest.com/store/books.
this market book is a must for those who wish to submit their images and photos to places that are looking for new material and material from experienced photographers.
:D
this is how i do it.
Get a picture of a celebrity doing soemthing that nobody has.
You need to make good pictures and showcase them. Of course, talent and knowledge of photography would help as well. Good luck!
People have given you some really good answers here. I am a somewhat recognized photographer. There is some of my work in Museums and some in private collections.
However, I have not made alot of money at it. You need to focus more on commercial photography instead of art to make money. I am not sure of your interests, but I wish you the best of luck!
Advertise advertise advertise! It's a slow process but it can be done. My daughter has done this; it took her quite some time. She did a ton of advertising, placed circulars in businesses and now has a web site. Her high school photography teacher is really proud of her now.
Get a website, use it as a portfolio for your pictures.
I have http://www.evophoto.net and I use
http://www.billwadman.com/photofolio/.
as the software on the website to display the pictures.
Look at other people's pictures, get ideas.

Try something new, make something new to use to take your pictures, be different.

I am in the same boat. I am going to school for photography myself and I would say, take some kick a s s pictures. Make sure your lighting is on point and you take pictures of what people like to see and that includes using photshop. And put yourself out there. Find someone who is in the field that will take you under their wing and show you new stuff. Like they say, it's not always what you know, but who you know.
I think the easiest way (not trying to be a smart *ss) would be to catch a Celebrity's photo.
Probably catch someone famous in a compromising position, a fiery plane crash, or an alien.
First, of course, take the courses necessary in high school and college. Get as much "journeyman/apprentice" experience under your belt as possible by allowing a professional ( if you know someone) take you under his/her wing. Build a portfolio and apply with newspapers (well-known or mini). Although the photo chief assigns the assignments, keep your ears open and try to get every extra assignment that your personal and job world can handle. Never stop practicing ---there's never anyone so good that there's not someone out there who wants the same desires you do. Believe in yourself and in what you want and you will succeed. .
postsome of your pictures on a website where alot of people will see it.
First go to a social event were there are bound to be famous people about take pictures of them and post them on the internet along with an aplication for them to hire your services.
My husband is into this. He started by using his family. Then he showed other family the pics. Next there is a friend of someone in the family who likes those and asks about doing his/her family. Word of mouth. Take pics of nature, family, or whatever your specialty is then post them in a coffee shop or library. Be comfortable. If you are good, the phone will ring..
i am in the same boat. i love photography but i have no idea how to put myself out there. i would just say sending ur pictures to magazines agencies and other stuff like that. or have a style that not many people are doing like maybe animals or plants or homes or i don't know what u are doing but maybe make urself a web site with some of ur best stuff. i know someone that is doing that now and he is getting places.
good luck.

Non-profit organizations sometimes need help. You never know who you might meet through them. Also, some small local newspapers; weeklies or real estate publications would also be a good start. Most of the above answers are great and should give you a good start. Good Luck!
start by taking good-to-excellent photos. Study compostion. Study famous and well-known photos to see what makes them popular and well-regarded. Pay detailed attention to photo equipment. Say cheese.
WELL FIRST I THINK U SHOULD SEE ALL THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S NAMES AND TRY TO MAKE YOURS ORIGINAL AS THEIRS.
