I am considering opening a feed/tack store and would like any and all information I can get to be successful?
Answer:
You need to contact the local 4-H clubs through the extension office as well as FFA chapters in the local schools to see what brand of cattle, horse, rabbit, goat, dog, chicken etc feed they already use. The feed distributors will probably work better with you on pricing if you commit to just one or two brands instead of trying to be all things to all people. Pick the one/two that is the most used in your area.
Another suggestion to get business from the "big guys" is to offer youth 4-H and FFA a set discount (5-10%) if they show proof of club membership at the time of purchase. But you will have to make that known at those clubs prior to the start of your season.
Good luck with your new venture!
To truely be successful in any business, IS ALL IN THE ADVERTISING..If you don't get the word out your open, you won't make any money...
That's easy, Purina sells more feed than anyone!
Go down to Rolex during the horse shows, and see all of the businesses trying to make it.
Problem is on feed, unless you buy huge quantiies, you can't touch the prices the big chains have (tractor supply), and most buy by price.
If you want to invest in niche brands, better make sure you've got enough customers, it's a different consumer, they're not going to change brands of feed because it's on sale for $2 / off like they do a can of green beans.
Tack is expensive merchandise to keep, styles come and go, better know what your consumer wants or you'll be stuck with lots of stuff that doesn't sell.
