Register a business name?
I am about to start up my own business; however, I am not quite sure how business names work. This will be an online business only, and I wont be selling physical objects.
First off, how do business names work? Do I need to go somewhere to register a business name so nobody can steal it? Also, do I need to get some kind of copyright to prevent somebody from stealing my companys logo, and if so; how do copyrights work?

To protect a business name within your industry, you would apply for a trademark.
Trademarks can be names of products or services, logos, slogans, packaging and even sounds and smells. In essence, a trademark can be almost anything that is used to identify a particular product or service. Registering a trademark grants the owner exclusive rights to the mark within the specified industry.
Of course, it's necessary to research the mark comprehensively prior to filing to ensure that there is no possibility of infringing upon another party.
This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.

I always incorporated all my businesses,I could have told certain people in my own state not to use my name,as a few did,but,it didn't hurt my business,I think if you want it in all 50 states to be the only name,there is more paperwork you need to file!Best of Luck!
Go down town and get a business license and register your business name. No one will be able to take the business name from you once it is registered.
