Does anyone have any ideas on how to promote my payroll and bookkeeping services?
Answer:
I also have a small business that relies on word of mouth, but to get more business, I suggest doing the following:
1. join a local chamber of commerce that is small (if you live in a major city, there are usually more than one); go to each networking functions, take business cards and offer a small discount to fellow members;
2. conduct free presentations to businesses, rotary clubs, social clubs, etc. on small business bookkeeping and accounting (be sure to issue a disclaimer on any written materials);
3. join a local governmental advisory board that works with your city or county government and that is aligned with your interests (small business board, tax advisory board, etc.). You will become acquainted with movers and shakers who may refer you business; and
4. get a website and concentrate on search engine optimazation for your business, instead of the website's looks. Trying to steer traffic to your website versus making it look good is best.
These have worked for me, but just be yourself and take a sincere interest in helping people and good things will happen. Good luck!
You may also want to put out a press release to your local newspaper that will announce your business to the community. Besides that if there is a small newspaper you might want to ask them if you can start writing articles on your specialty or even put out your own newsletter and send it to clients and potential clients too.
