You should apply for a DBA (Doing business as) with the county first. It should cost less then $100, will secure the name of your business (so no one else can copy it) and I believe give you a tax id number.
After that have fun with it, but remember to stick to it. The hardest part of owning my business was the fact that I am my own boss, which means no one yells at me if things don't get done!! Days slip by into weeks or even months sometimes!
You have to register your business name with your state.
Or if you are the owner operator and have NO employees, you can still just use your SSN but you should always check with your state first.
Go to your locale chamber of commerce. The business license doesn't cost much. You probably want a sole proprietorship type.
