I started my business selling on Ebay and other forums. I wanted to sell electronics because they were new, they sold fast and all I had to do was ship them out. I found a supplier and began selling on Ebay. Didn't require a lot of money up front and there is always demand for my products.
You should think about how much interaction you want with your customers. Avon would require a lot of personal interaction and one-on-one selling. My best advice to you would be to sell what you are interested in. What are your hobbies? What do you do for fun? To make it in any business, you need to be passionate about what you do. Choose something that interests you, find a niche to sell it to and you're off!! Just a thought.. Good Luck!!

Do some homework in whatever you decide on. Most businesses fail because the proprietors do not know the ins and outs of the business; they are not willing to put in the extra hours. sometimes long hours.
Go to your local Small Business Administration and get all the free literature you find. READ. Ask questions. Go to the library and read. Search out information on the Internet, try to separate the propaganda from the factual, not always easy.
Learn Donna Dewberry's One Stroke Painting technique and offer to do work for people, or decorate their furniture or walls.. or do crafts utilizing the One Stroke Painting technique from your home (paint flowers and get inexpensive frames and sell these to novelty shops, gift shops or at flea markets). Requires NO computer skills, just the patience to learn a few strokes that come with practice.
Take a few courses in photography at a local community college at night, or at the local "Y" and read as much as you can. Then, buy camera, lenses, filters, lighting equipment and backdrops and run a photo-studio from home. Work for an experienced Wedding Photographer for a few years (mostly one day a week, like Saturdays) and learn the craft. You can also take courses in digital programs that deal with photography and you can do work at home for photographers (enhancing, tweaking, transplanting or eliminating things, etc., but you MUST have a working knowledge of photography).
Learn to do semi-precious jewelry and sell to stores and novelty shops or to people at flea markets. No computer work, except maybe to contact people via email.
Learn to silk screen and do T-shirts or baseball caps (not with registered trade marks or copy righted words, icons or images.) (It helps if you have a basement with good ventilation. Silk screening is now computerized.
How good are your language skills? Correct term papers for college students, do typing for high school and/or college students (learn to type in about 3 weeks, if you practice typing 20-30 minutes everyday for 3 weeks with Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing CD). You'll learn to type EFFICIENTLY to the point where it is effortless, and you won't waste time looking at the keyboard and you'll make far fewer errors!
Build a reputation of excellence in whatever you decide and work at it so that you can have steady work coming in!
