Nah, get the messengers on your side. Suborn the messenger network from within, making sure they report only what I want my enemies to know, which is a mixture of false flattery and disinformation which will eventually lead to them tripping over their own feet and falling flat on their faces.
If you acquire a reputation for shooting the messenger, messengers will only lie to you, tell you what they think you ought to know, and before you know it you're picking yourself up off the floor having failed to notice your shoelaces are untied, and yelling "Why did nobody tell me this!"
