Welcome to the small business owner world. Over the past year, my husband and I have worked our tails off keeping his business going. It gets hectic, there will be days when you want to scream and quit. But never give up. It will all be worth it in the long run.
One thing I have learned is you can't possibly no everything before you start your business, so don't be ashamed to call and ask questions. I call the IRS and get help, my accountant, whoever will tell me what I need to know. So far I have only ran into one person that didn't know what I needed to know, and that was the IRS.uh oh! But usually, I get a very helpful person that walks me through whatever I need. Oh and get a good program. I use MYOB...go to www.myob.com Its great!

go for the internet business which requires less of your time and the one that will not make you feel headache with web designing, or which require IT knowledge. Second, choose the internet based company which offer you the opportunity and at the same time giving you the convenience to start the business. Third, choose the business, which does not require big money to start it.

sadly, you didnt mention what short of business you are looking into.
but some general stuff.
first thing, investment. more is your investment, more better is it.
but do make sure that you make right use of it. in initial days of business. make sure most of your money is spent on most fundament stuff.
advertise.
believe me, its effective. but make sure that you spend no more that 15 to 20 % of your investment in advertising. you can increase this range. only if.. you are putting in a very large sum of money.
Quality first.
all your investments and advertisements are not useful if they dont show any results. and results would be seen only if you can provide quality. no matter whatever your business is. quality is what boosts it.
all your power.
remember that, its your business. and its gonna make money for you in future. so. give in all your power to it. its your baby. and you have to make it big enough that it can take care of itself.

I don't have a ton of time but - I will put in my 2 cents.
I will repeat what another said.with great stress on it.
DO NOT QUIT - it is very frustrating at first ( I am talking years here) it can take a long time to really get going and you must have the ability to either not worry about the money aspect of it because your spouse can suport you during the years it is "sucking" Or you must have the ability to hold another job for those years.
It is soooo tempting to quit when things don't go according to how you hoped - but a trust worthy saying goes like this. (and I try to remember it when I am feeling frustrated)

own businesses are a work in progress - I have been in business for about 5 years now and I still tweek the way I do things, and I must have the ability to grow and be flexible as my business grows. I move in the directions it leads me and blow off the things that seem to be dead ends.
