SAGE is it the best or is there anything better on the market??

Answer:
depends what you want to do with it.

its a pretty good system for small businesses, but doesnt lend itself to larger applications easily. a number of years ago sage bought out tetra, you can get something called sage-tetra CS3. it had a really good MIS suite with MRP, CRP, BOMs etc, but the accounts side was a bit lacking. hopefully sage have added thier accounts expertise to it and made it all singing all dancing.

so horses for courses, sage do a lot of different products depending on your requirements. make sure you pick the right one and i dont think you will complain, but choose too big or too small and the word "square peg - round hole" will apply.
Sage & Onion by Paxo is better
SAGE is good but please, whatever you do, don't consider EFACS! i used it for a good couple of years and it was a nightmare! if you hear the name mentioned spit on the floor for me!
The busty babe on the Melon stall mmmmmmmmmm
Sage does accounting in English and understands VAT.
There is little or no competition,
Have a look at

http://sourceforge.net/projects/phporgan.

I dkon't know if its any good though.
Have you heard of QuickBooks?..its an accounting system that does absolutely everything. I used it for the past year or so and found it easy to use. Do a little research on it. I have no comparison with Sage as I have never used it but many accountants nowadays are using QuickBooks too.
QB can set up invoicing/suppliers/customer database and all aspects of small business.
As with any question of this type, different people will have different opinions - there is no "correct" answer. It also depends on exactly what you need it for. Is it for home use? Are you a small business? An accountant? Do you want to run payroll? Do you want to maintain asset information? Do you need to track stock?

Some of the most widely used are:
Sage
Quickbooks (Intuit)
MYOB
Moneysoft

Most, if not all, allow a limited time free trial period. Use the free trials to determine which is best for your needs.
I would consider Sgae to be the best, I have used Quickbooks but don't like the set up.

If you open a business bank account with Barclays, the will give you a free copy of Sage for your business.
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Microsoft Excel! Honestly, this program can do ANYTHING you like, and is exportable into anything you like. It's all about knowing how to build the spreadsheets
