I am self employed with no card machine?

How can i find out if one of my customers who wants to pay using thire (visa electron) debit card, has enough funds in thire account?

Answer:
Do you have a merchant account? If so, then you don't need a machine to accept a credit card. Most of them have on-line forms you can use these days. Very easy, and simple enough to know if your transaction is approved.

If you don't have a merchant account, then you can't take credit cards (or debit cards for that matter). Your only option is PayPal or something like it, and that opens an entirely new can of worms.
Call the number on the back of the card
Use paypal
If you have a merchant account # all you need to do is phone the VISA authorization # and they will authorize the funds over the phone.
tell then that you want their statement of billing, the latest one
