Any suggestions on opening a baking business from home?

A friend and I are opening a baking/catering business and would appreciate any help. We will be offering an array of cookies, small pastries, breads, muffins, etc.

Answer:
You need to get a food service license, and tax ID. You may want to form a LLP, limited liability partnership.

Drop a few bucks on an attorney for the best answers to this in your area, or go to the SBA, small business association. Not only will they tell you the rules, they will have lots of good advice and suggestions to make your business successful. They may also be able to make low interest loans available to help with startup.

Best wishes.
I will approach this from a consumer's point of view. I don't bake so I buy a lot of those items you are making from people like you.

Usually the people have one item that they specialize in or do really well. I very seldom buy all my baked goods from one vendor. My favorite place to get baked goods is at a farmers market.

I would check if you can sell your goods to some local restaurants. One lady makes excellent cheesecakes. She marketed them to local restaurants, even one's in hotels. Now there are quite a few restaurants that serve her cheesecake as dessert.

I buy some of my baked goods at local bakeries. I like to buy here because the goods are fresh and no preservatives.

I would check to see if a local supermarket or convenience store would carry your goods. One lady started out making varieties of doughnuts that were very good. She used to sell them at the local market on Saturday's then expanded into the convenience stores and supermarkets. She now has a large business and ships all over.

Remember family and friends and word of mouth. One lady I work with made great pies and has won numerous awards for them. She just sold pies to family and friends and co-workers. Soon she was getting orders from friends of those. She was doing this part time and was making good money and was debating about doing it full time. She decided that when she retires she would do it full time.

Hope this gives you a few ideas. Good luck and success!
