Please could yoy tell me the law on checking bags of employees at work?

Answers:
It's absolutely legal for a company to check anybodies bags even in a snap inspection but the employee must be able to have representation (from a colleage or hr) when it happens
Try putting a notice on the staff notice board notifying of the possibility of this happening. You are entitled to do it, but have representation with you if you do.
Its usually written into the contract of emlployment so its perfectly legal.
Depends on the state. In california you must give your permission and they can only looking inside while you hold it open. If you refues your employer can refuse to allow you to enter the property.
The company need do be displaying a Right of search poster somewhere within the place of work.

If they have this they have the right to search.

This doesn't mean that if you were asked for them to search yo or your bag, that you are suspicious.

You have the right to have somebody to be with you when they search.

If you are female, you have the right to be searched by a female and vice versa for a male.
It is legal and should have been disclosed to you at the time you were hired or when the policy went into effect. You are on your employers private property and subject to checks based upon safety and security. However, if a disclosure was never made, then you may have recourse. Seek counsel at your local "Legal Aid" which is listed in your phone book. I imagine that they were not so lax as to miss the notification however and you most likely have no recourse then.
You signed and agreed to have locker/bags/computer/personal property checked when the position was offered to you. Rememeber? Also proprietary information that belongs to the company is still theirs. Also ideas you come up with because of working on something at your company is theirs because you had access to the companie's machinery, products, processes, operations, technical manuals. Do not carry anything in your bags you do not want the company to find out.
I believe that as long as you are on private property, they can check your bags/purse,etc. that you bring onto the property. I'm pretty sure that they must have a notice posted outside the building, by the entrances, that states that they have the right to search your bags.

On government property, expect a bag search everytime, at any time, without having been notified.

When I worked at a famous building on the American west coast, they checked everyone's bags after 9-11, and we just had to deal with it. (Employees and tourists).
The thing that made me mad was that they expected non-trained non-security personel to check the bags of the tourists coming into the building. I refused, since I had not been trained as a security officer. It caused a stink, but I would not do it unless my job title included "Security officer" which it didn't, and unless I'b been trained in security, which I wasn't.
They just wanted us to make up for their lack of funding for security for the building and for the people who worked there.
It was pathetic.

Good luck!
