depends on the gift and the person for whom you are buying it for. A family member local store spouse/gf or bf i would spend a little extra time looking around.

i would go for the unique option.i really love giving gifts, and i really take alot of effort and thought and time into planning what gifts to give to the people i care about.
A local shop/store is better in my opinion, because more times than none you can get exactly what you want, or get it custom(ized) to :) Plus it helps your local economy :)
right now with $$$ to tight i'd go to the dollar strore

a corporate store I've been to a lot & know where to find things.
i would go to a big corp. store you could probably find more stuff.
big corporate store for bigger selection
If I want a UNIQUE GIFT I go online and purchase it
