How do I launch, publicize, and gain user loyalty for a new wiki-like website?
Answers:
The biggest issue with wikis is they display a strong critical-mass phenomenon.
In other words you need quite a lot of content to make it worthwhile for someone to visit. Without it being worthwhile to visit, people are unlikely to want to spend time contributing to it.
Obviously the quantity of information you need is smaller if the wiki is very niche. If its a wiki on prostate cancer, for example, you could be useful with a few tens of pages, if it is a wiki on major league sports, you'll need thousands before it is worth a visit.
As for who to advertise too, that depends on the topic. Advertise to people who would be interested in visiting. Google ads are okay, if you can find relatively cheap keywords.
In general it is _very_ difficult to do this from a standing start. I'd assume it will take literally years to build a good deal of momentum.
