I'm currently in the process of subletting my shared apartment room for the remaining of the lease (3 more months) because my current roommate did some shady stuff and made the situation really awkward between us. I can assure you that it is so bad that I am moving out. Because it is only a temporary position, a couple people have told me that I should just pay the monthly rent but then have the person who is subletting pay me back and avoid the whole business of consulting the manager in case the manager doesn't allow it or decides to charge us ridiculous fees. The person is scheduled to move in in a couple of days, so I desperately need some advice.
Answers:
That's generally how subletting works however you'll want to get the person to sign a lease maybe or a promissory note saying that she will pay you. Other than that you have no legal grounds if she doesn't pay (and you do). Otherwise, ask for the 3 months up front or 1 month security deposit.
