Instead of living in Salt Lake City itself one could pay less rent living in the Utah Valley area which is just about half an hour south of SLC.
Rent in the Utah Valley area (specially around the universities UVSC and BYU ) is 550-750 a month for a 2-3 bedroom apartment.
Sales tax is 6.25%
Gas is pricey these days in Utah.
It really doesn't snow that much - only if one lives in northern Utah or up in Park City then it does snow lot.
