the landlord states that i must give a sixty day notice. i wanted to add my girlfriend to the lease and sign for another year. at the time(beginning of march), i was not within my 60 days and they told me to wait and then submit the addition to the lease when signing the new one. they stated that they would send me the lease at the sixty day point. they did not and i went and asked to see a new lease. they said the manager wasn't available since it was saturday. the leasing agent said she would put the new copy for my girlfriend and i to sign on monday. by friday, still no lease. i then went to ask again on friday after taking the day off to speak with the manager. the new lease was 714 for a studio. the is an increase from the 669 i was paying. now it is 2 weeks before my lease expires and they say i must pay for another months rent. i have since found another apartment to rent and feel that they were not professional in providing me with a timely leasing option.

In California, the notice period is supposed to be equal to the rental payment period - UNLESS the lease specifies a longer or shorter period.
Check your lease agreement and see what it says. If it doesn't specify, then check your local landlord/tenant law. I think 30 days is usually reasonable if not specified.
Many states publish a tenant handbook. Try searching "<your state> tenant handbook".
If you are in California here is the link:

Good luck.
You have to read your lease, but generally you are obligated to 30 days notice. You may have to double pay for a month.
Its a good idea to talk to your local tenants rights council or the apartment association. www.yourpropertypath.com has a list of about 600 associations by state
