In NC you can. The only requirement is does it fit? If not, ask the neighbor if you can borrow a foot or teo of his land - usually it is OK.
Just being a little silly here, but I have seen good hard evidence of this around here.
To find an answer to that question you need to pay a visit to your county (the county in which the property is located) building department. They can tell you about not just building requirements, but also the requirements for placing a mobile home on property. I've had some exposure to that kind of situation, but not what you're trying to do. I'm aware though that people who want to build a home on bare land often want to live in a mobile home on the land while the home is being constructed, so there are provisions that allow them to do that. But you need to ask your local people about the specifics of what you have in mind, whether it's legal, and if it isn't..is there a way to do it and still comply with local ordinances.
It's best to do your homework at the front end of this kind of decision making, because if you go ahead and put 5 mobile homes on the property and get everything all set up and lived in, then the county comes along later and tells you to dismantle everything, and or issue citations, it will only add unwanted to grief for your family. There's always a neighbor somewhere that will report a perceived violation. Best to get it right the first time.
