Any bank can tell you if it's real or not.

try to use it at any store. if it works, it's good.
Call the 800 number on the back of it and give them the check number, and amount. They'll tell you if it's good.
take it to american express and ask them
go to a bank and maybe they can answer
once you turn it to cash, I'd say it was pretty good
don't pay in advance for it
call American express, the number should be on it
drop it to the floor see if it bounces
take it to a bank, most likely, it's from american express and it's not really a gift.
