How can you find the name that is associated with a certain social security number for free?

My neighbor's social security check was stolen and when the person cahsed the check she used a fake id with the id number written in and she signed the check and used a social security number. We are trying to find the name that goes with the social security number so we can turn that name into the police. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Turn the info over to the police yourself. File a report. Looking for that info yourself will get you into trouble and will be inadmissable in a court of law.
A lot of the web lookup services are scams. And the legitimate ones will usually require the name of the person (which doesn't help you).

I think your best bet is to turn the information over to the Police and/or FBI and let them use their databases (this information is probably not public).
Report the theft to the police and the social security office. They will follow up.
Sounds illegal! But otherwise, sounds like a job for your trusty local Social Security office-- access them online forst,, see if your Q appears in a general FAQ part-
