"Charged off" debt by 1 creditor was "paid" with another, poss to get neg report off, since they are same debt?

"Charged off" debt was bought by a collections agency and I settled with them and paid off the debt. Now my credit report shows the same debt 2 times. One with the original creditor as "charged off", and "paid" by the collections. Is there a way to get the negative report off the records for that debt since it has been paid off? Or am I SOL.

Answer:
You may be SOL, but you can at least try to get it off. I would challenge both debts as "not mine" with the credit reporting agencies. If you're lucky, one or both will come off. www.creditboards.com is a great resource for learning how to fix credit problems.

Good luck!
No, but you can requets to have an explanatory note added to the first debt - provide the paid off notice to each of the 3 credit reporting bureaus. It's still a negative report because it was charged off, the fact that it was later paid doesn't help your credit rating.
I believe you are out of luck as the history report is accurate. You failed to pay the primary creditor in a timely fashion which forced them to turn over the account to a collection agency. While you eventually paid the debt in full, there were two different creditors trying to collect the same money and the bureau report reflects this. If there was some special circumstance as to why you did not pay on time in the first place, you do have the option to contact the credit bureau and have an explanatory note on your file. Otherwise, the derogatory info will drop off your credit report in 7 years. Your best bet is to make sure you pay everything else you owe ON TIME and the negative info will have less of an impact. Generally , banks look most closely at the past two years of credit history when making a decison as to what degree of risk they would be taking if they lent you money.
As for the collection agency you could always call and tell them that you were told by the collector when you paid it that it would be removed. If they try to argue tell them you will simply sue them and if that doesnt work then you are SOL but many of them will go ahead and delete it if you tell them the collector told you they would because A. they dont want a lawsuit and B. they really dont care cause you paid them. You will still however have the negative mark from the creditor.
