My bank made a mistake and my account has $60 more then it should have, what do I do?
Answers:
Call the mistake to the banks attention. Mostly because it's the right thing to do. Sucks, but it is. : )
I say just enjoy the $60 because the bank screws you over all the time and dont feel bad about taking it. It wont be long before they screw up and take extra money from you or higher their fees.
Don't spend it. The bank WILL find out. There's constant auditing going on with their (your) money. If you spend it, they don't care if you spent it or not, they WILL take it back. Admit it, they are not going to say, "We made a mistake putting $60 dollars in your account. Go ahead and spend it."
Do the right thing and call the bank. Set the record straight.
What goes around comes around.
Ask yourself, "At the end of the day will I like myself more for screwing the bank or being honest?". Then go with that answer.
This happened to me about 5 years ago... I made a cash deposit and the teller must have missed typed my deposit amount. I didn't catch it until a month or two later but hadn't spent the money since I didn't know it was there. On my next visit to the branch I told the Branch manager whom I knew well from frequenting there for personal and business banking. I told her what happened, when it happened, and asked what I should do. She said that the teller's balance report showed his totals balanced out alright so it was unlikely that they would ever find out and since it had been so long and it hadn't been noticed already just keep the money and forget it happened. The bank never did say anything about it. I guess it depends on how the error happened and if it's traceable back to your account. But i'm reminded about a recent news story a few years back about a woman who checked her bank balance and there were several thousand dollars more then there should have been. She spent the money without a thought and the bank sued her. I don't remember how that turned out.
