How select a good CPA?
I am looking for myself--I have investments, but don't own a small business.
what should I ask?
what should I investigate/ look into about them?

You can go to your bank and ask. They can tell you what's right for you and show you different options.
Before anyone can answer this question, we need to know what type of investments you have. Are they stocks, mutuals, an estate, ira's, and so forth.
The tax treatment for each of those depends upon how they are held, and I'm assuming that is what you are seeking a CPA for...tax issues.
A CPA may very well know that tax code, but remember that the only reason a cpa exists is to conduct external audits. Anyone can know the tax code, which in turn makes your search for competent legal advice that much more difficult.

Not very many CPA's information is in the public arena. It is difficult. As a CPA myself, almost all of my clients were from referal. Therefore, I would ask your friends about who they use. And if you know someone who owns a business, he must have an accountant or CPA to handles his/her books, sales tax, taxes etc.
I would also interview the CPA. Search the web for local CPAs and visit their offices. If you see a mess in their office, run from them, most likely they will be late on your taxes etc. Ask him/her questions like what type of clients they have. Tell them your situation and see how good they can answer your questions. Let me know if you have questions.
