Should I close checking account?

My husband and I have a joint checking and most of the bills are paid from that. I give him a certain amount each payday to help with our joint bills. Plus I have my own checking account and use it for the personal bills I pay.The problem is I end up usually having a fairly low balance by the time I give him a big chunk of my check and pay my own bills. Then I must get crazy with what is left or forget to write things down because I overdraft frequently. I have overdraft protection, but it is linked to a credit card so that runs my charges up each time they add to my card balance to put it into my checking to cover the overdraft. I am very determined to get my charges paid off but with this deal I feel like a hamster in a wheel, just getting no where. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Having two accounts can get to be a little over whelming at times.

I myself prefer having my own account besides the joint.

You just got to get in the habit of carrying your check register with you and write down your transactions while you do them.

It only takes a few seconds to write down what your doing while the cashier is swiping your card and waiting for the transaction to be completed.

Most banks offer check registers as a free service, because they too prefer you use them. Along with using the register use the other tools the banks offer you such as on-line banking.

Just remember on-line banking is a tool to show what has come in and the balance will not be 100% accurate unless there are no outstanding items.

However if you use on-line banking along with a register you should see your overdraft fees go down.

Bottom line is if you feel you cant do this or just feel that this is too much then yes close the account and let your husband have total control over the bills and payments since he seems to have the joint checking under control.
Why do you think if you closed your account you would not have to use overdraft on your joint account. You should see if your bank has some sort of email notification when your account is getting low. If your joint account isnt going into overdraft see what is the difference there. Whoever is monitoring that account should monitor your personal account.. Also, if you want to ever buy something without him knowing, if you only have a joint account he will have to know.
What kind of husband is it expects his wife to give him a big chunk out of her little check? He should realize you have your own personal bills to pay
We have only one joint account and my wife is in charge of the finances. We talk about everything we spend so that there are no surprises. Overdraft fees suck and together we made it a point to control the bank and our credit cards not the other way around. So, you two should talk about it and I know you two will come to the right decision for your family!
