The best "technique" is have a product you truly believe in AND listen first to the needs of the customer. Be sure it is a good solution for THAT person's needs. Never recommend your solution or product without listening first and never recommend it if it is not a solution for them that is good. They will never ever trust you again and word will get round. Recommend a competitor to a particular customer IF that competitor meets that customer's needs better in that particular situation. Don't be pushy. Don't talk about features of a product irrellevant to that customer's needs. Don't go into the "so what" features. Connect features to the customer's real needs. Customers don't want widgets or services. They just don't. They want their need met they want the outcome. Speak to that.
