I have always found that just going door to door and telling people about your cause is the best way to go. It's amazing how people are willing to give to things.
Another thing you can try is a "free" car wash. By doing a free car wash and asking for donations, most people will give a great deal more than what you would normally have charged. Some companies will let you use their parking lot and they might even match what you make. You can't beat that deal.
