How many individuals trading online totally in US? how many trades per day? How many broker-dealers?
Answer:
There were 14.3 million online investors at the end of 2000, 17.4 million at the end of 2001 and 20.6 million at the of 2002. With these figures you can calculate your trendline, growing at 125% pace every five years. That would be over 35 million online traders today. The source is a book by David Hallerman.
E-trade and TDAmeritrade report the figures quarterly.
E-trade reported an average of 138,367 trades per day for July. They stated that they had 3,600,000 trading accounts.
TDAmeritrade just reported 196,000 trades per day for August. They stated that they had 6,170,000 customer accounts.
Schwab reported 245,200 trades per day for July. They state that they have 6,800,000 customer trading accounts.
There are other firms that also have on line brokerage for which figures are not available, but these three would make up probably 50% of the trade. 16,000,000 accounts for these three and 540,000 transactions a day would extrapolate into about 32,000,000 accounts and over 1,000,000 transactions per day. More or less.
