I would suggest no-load, low fee mutual funds, such as those sold by Vanguard or Fidelity.
For a level of comfort, try index funds, which over the long run will provide you with about 10% per year compounded, which over the years - if you are young enough - will make you a millionaire.
If you are not a skilled investor, and I don't think you would ask the question otherwise, I would not do anything else with the money.
I would suggest a safer place to put your funds. A banks money market fund (call around for the best rate) I have one and it pays 4.6% APR and you can access the funds by check without penalties. I also just invested funds in a 7 month Certificate of Deposit that pays 5.75% APR. I chose to put money in short term CD's because you are locked in for that amount of time. And the rate could possibly go up in 7months. You don't have to worry about loosing your money as you do in a mutual fund, money markets and CD's are insured. Also when checking rates pass up the large banks for the small local ones, they usually pay the highest rates! Good Luck!
