Melt Value?

How much is the current melt value of one penny? Would it be possible to hoarde a ton of these and profit huge later, or is that not feasible? Just wondering?

Answers:
The component value of a penny is worth more than face value so hoarding huge quantities (we are talking fractions of a cent here) and melting them down would theoretically make sense. However, (there is always a however) the US government through the Treasurer's office has made this illegal. Also they have placed limits on how much coinage can be sent overseas at any one time to discourage having the coins melted overseas.
i remember hearing that if you melted a penny it would be worth less. There is no point in melting a penny. the government found that people might do this and places common metals inside when striking.
It may be profitable; really don't know. But I am frairly sure it is illeglal to deface U. S. coinage. So, it might be a good idea to find out before you go any further with this.
