At $7/trade, it is not bad for mainstream online brokers - there are some limitations if you want to use Scottrade as an investment base (for example, no free reinvestment of stock dividends).
If you planning to be very active in your trading and you have enough capital, consider a direct broker like Interactive Broker.

I use it and I like to it is pretty simple and you do get a lot of information. Also, there are local offices that help you do if you don't understand something.
Scottrade is a very good service, offering low-cost trades. I used to use it, but moved to another because I felt that their Web site and tools were not up to snuff compared to other services. However, that was a few years ago, and Scottrade has said to have upgraded its Web site and tools.
It has received very high remarks by JD Powers & Associates, which measures customers' satisfaction. I would give it a try for sure if I were you.
Scottrade is no better than average when it comes to anything that matters such as price, execution, features, info, and tools.
They wouldn't let me trade index options and other option trading seemed to scare them.
