Where can I find S&P 500 data for the last 80 years?
Answer:
The S&P 500 was created in 1957 by Standard and Poors. Any data before this simply uses the S&P 500 methodology and worked backwards.
Yahoo has data back to 1950 on a daily basis:

Premium Data offers it back to 1928 with their commercial data history:

(this data is in "MetaStock" format but can be converted into ASCII/CSV with third party conversion programs).
The S&P 500 hasn't been around that long. If you do get data back that far, it is estimated.
The Dow (DJIA) has been around since 1897, actual numbers. They are available from Yahoo Finance back to 1928, just before Black Monday and the Great Depression. These are some great charts, and you've got to check out the mayhem and destruction. The data is available in daily, weekly, and monthly prices.
