During the 1930's depression, how, if at all, were the Americans that had their gold confiscated compensated?

You see all these ads for gold for sale to prepare for hard times but what is to prevent this from happening again. People that had "hoarded" (saved) gold were called "traders with the enemy" by the U.S. government at that time. Also, they were threatened by the government to have their names publicly printed as such as an additional incentive to relenquish any gold holdings.
