What's the best kind of health insurance to get straight out of college?

I know the ideal would be to get a full-time job with benefits, but if that isn't possible, how can I protect myself without paying an unnecessary fortune? Should I get a more basic plan like "major medical", or is that useless because of the huge deductible? What other options are out there?

Answers:
Anthem Blue Cross has good plans for your age group. They are called Tonik Plans - offer the more common and necessary coverages for your age group.
if you in decent health, get a higher deductible plan as is cheaper, and is protection against major expense, ie if you become hospitalized. Regular doc visits you shouldn't need to have insurance for.
If you live in Illinois, call me and I can discuss options and deductibles, etc. I am with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Ill.
I have always liked Blue Cross Blue Shield in Massachusetts, and I have the second best plan that allows me to choose my own physician. Keep this in mind: In February, the hospital charged $21,000 for a week of neurological tests. I paid a $500 deductible. I'm older; my policy costs $730 a month.

So, obviously the provider and what is provided varies by policy and state. In some places you can join groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and get reduced rates on very good plans.
In most states, companies sell what they call short term medical policies. These are typically 6 - 12 month plans with few underwriting questions; unless you have pre-existing major medical problems (diabetes, heart, cancer HIV +) they are quick issue and a good deal for recent college grads. Then if you get a corporate job you can cancel when your employer covers you. If you need it for longer term, they'll usually continue coverage.
