I am looking for advice on entering the area of insurance underwriting. Can you provide any resources, etc.?
Answer:
You didn't mention whether you'd like to get into life, health, or P&C underwriting.
If you want to learn more about L&H underwriting, LOMA offers a great overview course: http://www.loma.org/underl&h.asp. Check with your employer to see if they'll reimburse you; some companies even pay up front.
You should also speak with your company's Underwriting Manager and explain you'd be interested if any jobs open up. Talk with the underwriters to get a sense of what the job entails, working hours, case load, and whether there are any special duties (I can personally attest that it's not an easy job!). These vary from one company to another.
I hope you get the job!
I worked for insurance companies for 12 years and you're asking for advice on how to move from one department to another? You're in the industry now? Are you kidding?
JUST APPLY!
I'm with Curt here .. .if you haven't figured out how to make contacts and inquiries in 5 years, you're NOT going to be a good underwriter. You have to be able to pick up subtle cues, and negotiate terms.
Best place to learn basic underwriting is at a wholesaler. BTW, underwriting does NOT pay as well as retail acccount servicing or sales.
