What is the best way to get hired at a company?

It just seems like employers either hire within or somebody they know. How does one get hired when he or she is not already in the company or doesn't know the right person or have the right contacts to get their "foot in the door"?

I've heard that it's often a numbers game. But I can't even find mass numbers of employers to where I'd want to send a resume. I want to be picky/choosy and select quality companies that fit within my interests and career goals. I don't want to just apply anywhere.

I'm in a FT job now and have been there for nearly four years and want to part ways with the place. I've experienced the rejection game in the past and I try not to take it personally, but it sure makes life more frustrating. I just wish I knew the magic answer.

Answers:
IMO, understanding exactly how a company makes money and how you can contribute is a big key.
Being able to articulate that with a sincere to the point statement gets your foot in the door.
Be consistant and persistant. Find out why you were rejected and make changes. If for instance they say you need more eduction then pursue that.
Let the HR director know you want to work for their company and that you want to contribute not just receive a check.
Be energitic, be genuine, and most of all be honest and direct.
Good luck.
You can get a foot in the door by accepting a low, entry-level position, one that probably most people wouldn't really want. Accept low pay and below-your-level tasks for a couple years, and while you're in the company, make connections with other employees and higher-ups, and prove your competence for the job you actually want.
