How do you make a home internet business become sucessful?
We have listed on all the directories we know of, have honed our lists of keywords and use pay-per-click. We are getting up to 2000 hits or more a month with very few purchases. Everyone we know loves the site (even the tech support guys and warehouse personnel who deal with us).
Is there anyone out there who have had success selling health supplents on the web who has any sage advise for us?

First off, how's your rank in the search engines.Don't listen to people saying it takes 5 years to start making money.WRONG!
You guys can improve your ranking instantly. Work on pagerank. Make sure your articles have the title at the top in bold and make sure the title has the keyword in it. Make sure the link for the articles you have on your website is named with the title/keyword.
To increase your pagerank right away, you can submit your own press release to prweb.com and create a blog or two with your articles and keywords.
Try submitting some of your original articles to health related websites. Create strategic alliances with other health related websites.
As mentioned, you'll want to capture visitors names and emails so you can follow up with them and keep in touch. The sale is in the follow-up as they build rapport with you. Not to mention repeat sales.
Create a podcast and add it to all the podcasting directories. Create a viral marketing effect. If I knew which site was yours I'd be able to give you more specific advice.
rule of thumb is that it takes 4 to 5 years before a new business is truly a money maker!

I have also found the process of Internet marketing to be difficult. It is a learned skill. Even with a great product line and a fabulous website, you still need many thousands of people to find your "store" in order to make sales. It is very important to capture as many email addresses as you possibly can. This gives you the ability to re-contact the people who have visited your store once and establish a relationship with them through repeated messages of real value. Remember that most people come to your site shopping for free information not to purchase something. You should offer to send them some valuable information in exchange for their email address. It sounds like you need to take a look at the "offer" you make and jazz it up with some direct selling copy. Are you capturing any of the names of the people that are coming to the site to build a relationship to get people that aren't ready to buy today? Where are you PPC clicks pointing to? What is your unique sellling proposition?
Having spent over 10 years in wellness, it can be a very tricky sell. If you are offering me-too type products, chances are, you will have a very hard time. Your marketing probably is not educating people enough, and/or it's not hitting the right emotional buttons.

Submit to a lot of directories can help benefit your sites ranking. The higher the ranking the more traffic the site could get in Search Engines.

You are in a very competitive niche and it can take time. 2000 hits a month is good but not enough for most businesses.
Add more one-way inbound links to your site - you may have to purchase high PR ones. If your site is linked to say a .EDU site your website will improve in rankings and thus more free traffic.
Google has made clear that relevant inbound links count a lot in reaching top20.
