Answer:
It's not easy to understand your questions. what do you mean by monthly stock returns? Most companies give quarterly dividends and they are deposited into your account. Bonds and other debt securities might provide monthly yilds but again they will be deposited into your account. You might be able to make an arrangement for them to be transmitted to you directly.

The safest thing for you is to keep the money in a savings account that is nsured. But if you can assume the risk you might get into the securities investment as desired by you but they usually are not for providing regular income to pay for rent and for putting food on the table.
It rather depends on the stocks, does it not? Some stocks offer better returns than others. And monthly is not a long enough period for judging returns. There are too many market fluctuations. Normally, returns are judged on an annual basis over a period of time that is normally, 5 years, 10 years, 25 years.

This site shows a graph of returns over long periods vs inflation of the S&P500 and other classes of investments. The data is somewhat scewed because it assume no taxes. Very bad assumption.

The next site shows annualized returns over of the S&P500 over various periods of time.

I am not a great believer in the S&P500 because it is tilted toward large cap stocks, but it is the index that everyone uses as a benchmark. I would prefer an equal weighted index. Most people do not invest based on market capitalization. At least they did not used to until the profusion of index funds.
