With the increasing gas prices, do you think there is a need for cars that use water instead of gas?
Answer:
I think everyone has already said that cars would never run on water - which is true if people kept the internal combustion engine. You could potentially try to create a new engine to use water, but it would be incredibly inefficient because water takes so long to heat up.
Instead, automotive companies are starting to develop alternative fuels. Using ethanol is the new fad (as several have mentioned), and it is indeed the most attractive option so far. Ethanol is easily prepared, it's low-cost, and low-emission. The only problem with ethanol is that it's an alcohol, so it evaporates quickly and is harmful to the body (not by drinking, but by prolonged exposure to skin).
The best option is fuel cells. It's an option that's been discussed for a long time because it uses hydrogen and oxygen to power a battery that only has pure water as a by-product, but is incredibly difficult to create because of the problems in acquiring and storing hydrogen. If a fuel cell that ran purely on oxygen and hydrogen were ever created and mass produced with low cost, it would be the answer to the world's gasoline-addiction. However, as of now, fuel cells are a long ways away.
Hence, it is important to use alternative fuels for cars (not just because of gas prices but also because of carbon dioxide intensifying the greenhouse effect), but alternative fuels that are a viable substitute for gasoline have yet to be introduced. For now though, gasoline and other fossil fuels will continue to dictate the ups and downs of the global economy.
I gas so.
It would be a wonderful solution.
yeh, Theyre called boats!
I wish.
Of course, this would be a wonderful solution, but if it were that easy, then we would already be using water-powered vehicles.
If we started using cars with water instead of gas the government would just put the price of water up instead!!
they should find other ways to heat your home rather than gas or electricity
Yes i do But I think ethanol cars are best because then you are also helping local farmers and creating more jobs. The other thing is we need water. Ethanol can be made out of waste from corn and citric acid. So it would create jobs and help with removal of waste
Water goes in the radiator. If you put it in the gas tank, the car won't run.
Yes it would be but here's the situation: Earlier automotive steam engines were big and bulky and impracticle. Then when smaller, more practicle ones were developed, they were not marketed because the major oil companies purchased their patents and burried them, as they continue to do anytime a feasible alternative to oil consumption is developed.
I see another answer suggested ethanol for good reasons, the trouble with that is it is still mostly oil and a little corn, heading the right direction. Another answer said we should find alternatives to heating our homes, that would drive down oil prices, they correct. There is something called a Geothermal Heat Pump that can heat/cool the average home for approximately $250 a year and operates on a closed system of antifreeze which never needs refilled. This alone would free us of our dependence on foreign oil, but they cost 8-10 thousand and the gov. does not offer incentives for this switch that few can afford to make.
The bottom line is that the oil companies will buy up any patent for any non-oil/gas using vehicles.
