Pat and Rick were staying together at a hotel. Pat paid the hotel rent, which came to 10.00, on which the receptionist gave him a discount of 5%. Rick paid for the meals, which cost him 7.50 + tips (15%). If they had to settle accounts, who owes whom how much money?

Answer:
Pat paid $9.50, if you take it simply and don't bring taxes into the equation.
Rick paid $8.62 (rounding down) for the meals.

The difference is $0.88, so Rick should pay Pat 44 cents. Then they each will have paid $9.06.

Incidentally, I'd like to know the name of the hotel where you can get meals for two for $7.50 and a room for $10.00! :o)
Well. let's see..

Pat paid 9.50 for the hotel (95% of $10)
Rick paid $8.63 (7.5 & 1.15 and rounding up)

This leaves a difference of $0.87 that should then be split between the two leaving Rick owing Pat $0.44 (again rounding up).

Hope this answers the question!
$10 for a Hotel? What did they stay in, a crackhouse.
Pat paid 9.50
Rick paid 8.50

Rick needs to give Pat 50 cents
easy, pat's bill= 9.50 and rick's bill= 8.625,
so the amount owed is half the difference, ie (9.5-8.625)/2 or 0.4375 which is owed by rick to pat.
Pat paid 9.50 for the room and Rick paid 8.63 for the meal so that means Rick owe Pat 0.87.
