Answer:
My friend got the same check today. We called M&T Bank at Wilkes Barre PA and talked to a Kris. She said it is a scam and have us fax her a copy of the check. She said their Fraud department is already working on it.
The phone number to M&T Bank is 570-821-7602.

Sorry but it is a scam. If anyone else already gave you this info sorry I duplicated it. I only read first couple of answers and wanted to let you know what we found out asap.
Thanks
A lotto works by signing up and or giving something, usually money. Lottos just don't hand out money and there is no such thing as a world wide lotto and Crosman corporation sells air rifles and paint guns. It's a scam.
My gut feeling is that this is a scam. My husband just got a "check" from some financial company for almost $5000 saying that he won a lottery of some kind. You cannot win a lottery that you never entered. The letter came from Canada - that is a big indication that it is a scam, if it is from out of the country. The financial companies address was in New York and none of the phone numbers work. Try doing a Google search on the company name or lottery name, it's probably fake. What you can do if you really want is take the check to the bank that it was issued from and have them verify the account and routing number on the bottoom. If it is real, it will be a real account. But my adivce is stay away!
I just saw a news report on this! It's most likely a scam - you should call the bank listed on the check - they'll be able to tell you if it's a 'fake' check. Good Luck!!
Is the check cashable? Does it say non-negotiable on it? (if so, it can't be cashed)

It's probably a scam, or just a form of advertisement.

If you think the check is cashable, I don't think there's a law against trying it (if you're not aware that it's false). It might be embarassing, though.
SCAM - it was on tv couple days ago. They will probably ask you to send them a check for taxes, and then their check will bounce - if it is accepted by your bank in the first place.
You cannot win any lottery you don't participate in. You must have a ticket to win.
Rip it up and throw it away. you can not legally participate in a foreign lottery. If you deposit this check into your account it will come back as a bad check and your bank will charge you a fee. Just throw it away and forget about it.
it's a scam trying to bilk you out of some cash..tear it up and forget it.
Did you enter the lotto?
Did any of your family enter the Lotto?
You get nothing for nothing in this world and it is my guess that this is a Scam with a capital "S"
It will be a scam but if you want to check it out contact your local police for more information. Just don't cash the cheque into your bank account. The bank may also be able to advise you.
You could have a bank look at it.
But it is probably a scam.
Did you enter a lotto?
Don't send then any money to cover taxes, fees or anything.
If you cash the check and it bounces YOU are responsible for the amount.
BE CAREFUL!
Try to look up the co. and call the better business bureau.
If the BBB has a complaint already take the check tot he police and have them file a report that the checks are being sent to you area and they should notify local banks of the scam.

Read all the material and the small writing on the back of the check, if any.
OH! I almost forgot,,,,, this could be a phone scam too! DO NOT call any numbers printed on it. Some of the out of country (Jamaica and other small islands') area codes can charge you a conection fee of hundreds of dollars(what ever they want) to get the info about the lotto. The "charges" will end up on you phone bill and if you don't pay it guess what.. NO PHONE!
Total scam. Do not send any money or any account numbers for them to wire you the money.
Ask yourself this: "Did I enter the World Wide Lotto?" If the answer is "no", then you could not possibly have won it.

Whatever you do, don't deposit that check in your regular account. Whoever is on the other end will have your account number after the check bounces. Then, they can wire transfer against your account and really mess you up.

If you want to see what happens, open a new account and deposit the check in there. Never use that account for anything else.
I would think it was a scam. Sounds like one and there are plenty of them out there. I don't know of any lottory played through the mail and if you didn't sign up for that or play it, it's probably a scam. I only knew of lottos that you played by buying a ticket with numbers you pick at a convenience store. Is it an authentic check with a watermark, an account number, a routing number and all that on it. Does the check list an actual bank? If none of that is on it than it's not real and nobody will cash it. Do they want you to mail them back with personal info? If so don't do it. Well I hope this helped. Good luck.
You can't win any sort of lotto if you don't play. So if you didn't buy a ticket then you could not have won and it's a scam!
Read everything that came with it. Take it to your bank & ask about it.
seems like a scam..
i got the same letter from world wide lotto inc. and a check for $1,780. however, mine is from Hampton L S Company. i'm wondering the same thing - is this a scam?

i'm gonna take it to my bank and ask them to physically verify its authenticity. i would suggest you do the same.

*IT'S A SCAM! i just called Hampton L S Company in portland, OR. they were the victims of identity theft. don't cash the check! report this to your local authorities - these people wanted to steal your identity.
I received the same thing today in the amount of 1780.00 for
TAX.from Hampton L S Company in Portland Oregon. The letterhead says WORLD WIDE LOTTO INC. I looked closely at the watermark on the check.it says VOID in big, barely noticeable letters. Take a close look. U.S. Bank does exist in Havre, Montana, which is the bank represented on the check. I spoke to Marsha there today and she says that someone has forged checks with this company's Name and account number and that they are NOT GOOD CHECKS---DO NOT DEPOSIT THEM BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OUT 1780.00!! She also recommended to take it to your bank and tell them about it so that they may post the information for others to beware!! Hope this helps!
Yes I did and I looked up the Crosen Corp and they sell guns.
My check is in the amount of 5600.00 and saying I won $59.400.00.
I sent Crosman Corp. an email asking if they know any thing about this.
I have not called the phone # listed in the letter and there was no return address.
I got the same letter, only mine was for $5600.oo. I just got it today, so I haven't had time to investigate it properly. I think it must be a scam, though. I'm going to make some phone calls tomorrow.
