one good way to reduce a somewhat hidden cost is to order larger amounts less times per year. this reduces costs on many levels like less PO's, less shipping/receiving costs on both ends, less accounting costs, less time spent dealing with all the issues of ordering. of course, if the cost is prohibitively high, order smaller amounts more often to reduce carrying costs. also, put things on standing orders.
