Job applying, resumes, and reference checks?
2. Say you worked at 3 places and put 2 down for references for HR to check. Has HR ever gone out of their way to call the employer that you didn't put down as reference. Can they actually go behind your back, look at your previous employer's website and call the HR to verify your info instead and not call the reference that you leave them?
Answers:
It is standard practice to go to HR for dates, position, reason for leaving and income information. Some companies also contact a supervisor, and a few contact a listed non-supervisor reference. They aren't going behind your back, they're doing the job the way it's supposed to be done.
The application almost always requires you to report all your positions in a certain time frame. It is falsification to leave a job off the app. It is also falsification to stretch the number of months you were at a particular job. And falsification is grounds for termination in many companies and always grounds for not hiring and rescinding a contingent job offer. Be honest on the application.
Be honest on your application. In many jobs if you are hired and it is found that you lied you are terminated. I believe they did this recently at a university. As well, it is even worse for your reputation if you are in finance. The reason is not knowing someone, their pattern of behavior is the best tell. If you lie that leads people to believe you may do it again. That doesn't usually make a good business.
