Never got paid!!?

I stay at home now, but before I had my son I worked as a graphic artist for a printing company. I left on good terms and have hoped that I could work for them again on a free-lance basis. Well, they contacted me about doing a job about two months ago. I got the job on friday and turned it in on Monday. They said it looked great and never contacted me about revisions. A few weeks went by and I didn't hear from them, so I called to touch base. They said it had already printed and the customer loved it. I talked to the owner, and he said he didn't have the cash on him to pay me, but that he would get ahold of me the next week and settle up with me. That was a month ago! I know that they have money trouble from time to time, but I did work for them and I know they were paid extra for hiring me. How do i get them to pay me without being rude?

I've been in the industry for over 30 years and know how this goes. Chances are you will get your money when? I looked at all the other answeres and they are all pretty sound for future dealings and maybe to collect on this job. The only thing I can add is instead of calling or writing is face to face with the owner. It's easier to blow you off over the phone. Stop in with a smile an ask how WE can resolve this matter. If you get the run around to see the owner tell the person that you need to see the owner about the truth. Nothing more than that. Works every time! The truth is WE need to resolve this matter. Good luck. If you are good and by the sounds of it you are they will want to use you again. Just be more professional about your bill procedures. Dot your i's and cross your t's. Again good luck.
I'd phone them up asking where your money is! This is ridiculous...
You really need to contact them and get on them every ten minutes or so. I would be furious if they didn't pay me!
I certainly hope you had a contract. Now you will probably have to beg them for your money. Send them a letter certified mail, requesting your money nicely. If they do not respond send another demanding it. You know the rest.
Send them an invoice. You can make one on your computer. If they don't have a bill from you they might forget that they owe you. Put a due date of 10 days or something since it's been so long. If they don't pay after that 10 days then send another one, this time saying past due. Keep sending invoices about once a month until you get paid. I don't know how much money you are talking so I don't know if it would be worth your while to go to court but you should be able to go to magistrate court if you have to go that route. There's a small fee to file so hold off for a few months until you are pretty sure they aren't going to pay. Then call magistrate court and ask what you have to do. Hopefully sending an invoice will work.
just call them and ask them up front. You won't be the one being rude; this your money you're talking about. They're the ones being rude for not letting you know what's going on.
