Who works at the gap?
Answers:
Hey fellow Gap Inc. employee,
First of all, don't be worried about your first day. You'll be fine. And you're not going to get fired if you don't get a GapCard on your first day, or your 2nd or 3rd day for that matter. So relax, and listen (read). There is a lot of information to remember, but seriously it just comes natural after awhile. You asked for detail, so you're gonna get it:
I work at Old Navy so my experiences are similar to yours when it comes to offering the card.
The most important thing to know about the brand credit card is (1) where it can be used, (2) what the customer needs to provide in order to apply, and (3) the benefits of the card.
(1) You're gonna call it a Gap Card, I'm gonna call it Old Navy card ... it's basically a "cross-brand" credit card that can be used at Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and most recently it can be used at Gap Inc's online brand, Piperlime (www.piperlime.com).
(2) Even if the customer is REALLY interested in opening the card and you don't want to miss out your opportunity of opening it for this customer you cannot process the application unless they have a valid ID, social security number, and major credit card. ID and SSN are for obvious reasons. The major card is for name verification (and perhaps other reasons I dont know about, such as running a credit check??).
(3) The benefits are the best part. I'm telling the truth b/c I myself am an Old Navy cardholder and I love using my card.
(I think Gap offers 15% off when a customer is approved for the card), but at Old Navy it's 10%, so I will use that in my example:
[me on the register, speaking to a customer:]
"Hi how are you doing today?"
- fine, thanks.
"Did you find everything alright?"
- yes
"That's good, Do you need any gift receipts?"
- no thanks
side note: see how I attempted to engage in conversation with the customer before asking/telling them about the card. Don't BOTHER them about the card... EDUCATE them about it... (I'm going to sound like a cheesy training video, but this really works) Instead of asking "would you like to save 10% today by opening our credit card?", try this below (you'd be surprised how many people say No to saving 10% right away b/c they don't want to open a card...)
"Just so you know, you have the opportunity to save 10% off your purchase today when you are approved for the Old Navy card. (**do not stop talking yet unless they totally cut you off with NO right away**) You can also get coupons for 10% off your next purchase here as well as Gap and Banana Republic."
- how long does it take?
"I can finish ringing your items while you fill out the application, and once I type in your information, we can let you know if you are approved or not in about 20 seconds"
- ok, sure
(give customer a pen and application)
"In order to process the app, I will need your driver's license and a major credit card for name verification. Nothing will be applied to this card, but if you're approved, the purchase will automatically be applied to your new card and you'll receive a statement in the mail"
- ok
If they seem interested, but you havent quite sold them on it, name other benefits:
For every $200 you put on the card, you get a coupon with your statement for $10 bucks back that can be used at any of our 3 brands (name them again) - Gap, Banana, Old Navy.
Cardholders are eligible for free shipping on any of our websites when you spend over $50 online.
Since you work at the Gap you can correct me if I'm wrong - Gap Card holders get 10 or 15% off on the first Tuesday of every month (this only applies to the Gap - not the other brands)
Anyways, hopefully you're still reading... I'd be more than happy to answer additional questions so message me if you need to. I've worked at Old Navy for 3 years and have gotten PLENTY of cards (in fact I opened ONCs 4 yesterday). It becomes simple, really. Have fun and welcome to the Gap Inc family:-)
